PowerVault Utility Hub R2: Is It Right for Your Grenadier?

A removable exterior charging hub makes sense only if the vehicle already has the right factory DTP outlet and the planned loads stay within that circuit. Here is the purchase decision before you spend $159.

Buy the PowerVault R2 if your Grenadier already has a factory DTP roof outlet and you want removable USB-C, USB-A, 12 V, and local light access outside the vehicle without drilling. Skip it if your vehicle lacks the outlet, you need a permanently bolted enclosure, you expect submersion, or you have not verified that the selected factory circuit can support the intended devices.

The 30-second decision

The PowerVault is a finished alternative to building an exterior charging box from loose parts. It includes the hub and a 1 m DTP-to-Anderson lead. Its four magnets make the unit movable, but they are not mechanical fasteners. Its output labels describe the hub; the Grenadier’s connected circuit still determines how much total power is available.

What problem does the PowerVault solve?

Grenadier owners already use the roof outlets for exterior charging and camp power. In a July 2023 forum thread, owner lollo050968 described the same need in one sentence:

“Made a gadget to have external power in the RTT and outside while camping.”

lollo050968, “External roof power supply gadget,” The INEOS Forum, July 19, 2023

The PowerVault Utility Hub R2 packages that idea into one weather-ready enclosure. The factory DTP outlet supplies the input. The hub converts that connection into two USB-C ports, two USB-A ports, one cigarette-lighter-style 12 V socket, and an integrated light.

First gate: does your Grenadier have the required outlet?

The PowerVault does not add factory wiring. It plugs into a DTP roof outlet that must already be present. INEOS describes the High Load Auxiliary Switch Panel as an option that adds extra circuits and integrated weatherproof roof outlets. A vehicle without the applicable outlet needs a different power plan.

This is not safe to infer from trim alone. In the forum thread “Rooftop Power - Base model,” GeoBike asked whether the wiring existed behind a vehicle without the exterior outlets. thedocaus replied that the base model did not have the rooftop outlets or wiring unless the auxiliary-power option had been selected. That is owner experience, not a substitute for inspecting the actual vehicle.

Pre-purchase check

Locate the physical DTP outlet you intend to use. Confirm its switch assignment and circuit information in the documentation for the exact vehicle. If the outlet is absent, the PowerVault is not plug-and-play on that build.

What is included—and what is not

Item Published specification Buyer implication
PowerVault enclosure Dust, mud, and rain exposure; not submersible Exterior use, but not extended immersion
Input lead 1 m DTP-to-Anderson cable included No extra cable required for the base setup
USB-C 2 ports, up to 65 W per port Check device profile and total circuit capacity
USB-A 2 ports, up to 22.5 W per port Check device input and cable condition
12 V output 1 cigarette-lighter-style socket Confirm the connected accessory’s requirements
Local light Integrated, switch activated Useful at the mounting point without occupying a port
Mounting 4 industrial magnets Repositionable; not equivalent to bolted retention

The package does not include a new vehicle circuit, a permanent bracket, or proof that every output can deliver its nameplate maximum simultaneously. The vehicle-side fuse and the connected DTP circuit remain part of the system.

The load question: connector fit is not electrical approval

The PowerVault receives power from a factory DTP output and provides its own USB and 12 V outputs. That does not increase the capacity of the vehicle circuit. For every planned device, compare three limits:

  1. The device manufacturer’s input, startup, and running requirements.
  2. The rating of the PowerVault output being used.
  3. The fuse and circuit information for the selected Grenadier outlet.

The lowest applicable limit governs. Do not add 65 W + 65 W + 22.5 W + 22.5 W and treat the result as a guaranteed simultaneous output. DVA’s current product page explicitly makes USB output subject to the vehicle-side DTP fuse capacity.

Magnetic mounting: convenience with a clear boundary

Four industrial magnets make the hub easy to move between suitable metal mounting points. That is the product’s main practical advantage: exterior power can follow the work area, campsite, or load zone without holes or permanent brackets.

The same feature creates the main tradeoff. DVA describes the magnets as retention-strength, not mechanical-fastener strength, and recommends supplementary retention for high-vibration or dedicated permanent mounting. Test the exact surface, remove grit that can mark paint, keep the lead away from hinges and latches, and recheck the hold after routing the cable.

Choose another solution when

You need a fixed installation that cannot be repositioned, the intended surface does not hold the magnets securely, or the hub and cable would sit in a pinch, impact, or immersion zone.

Which jobs suit the PowerVault?

Planned use Fit Reason
Phones, tablets, cameras, USB-C laptops Strong fit Four USB ports outside the cabin; verify each device and cable
Temporary camp or work-area charging Strong fit Movable enclosure and integrated light
One documented 12 V accessory Conditional Accessory requirement and vehicle circuit must both support it
Several high-draw devices at once Needs calculation One upstream vehicle circuit supplies every output
Permanent unattended installation Weak fit Magnetic retention is designed to remain removable
Submerged or continuously wet placement Not suitable The product is explicitly not rated for submersion
Grenadier without factory DTP outlet Not plug-and-play The required power source is absent

EXT2 and EXT3 change how the system behaves

The physical outlet also determines switch behavior. In the owner thread “External sockets and roof mounted switches,” DaBull reported that EXT3 operated three roof outlets together while EXT2 operated the right-front outlet. The original poster then changed the lighting plan after realizing two rear loads would switch together.

Use that report as a planning warning, not a universal specification. Confirm the actual outlet and switch on the vehicle. If another accessory shares the switched group, include that load in the circuit plan even when it plugs into a different physical outlet.

When a DTP splitter belongs in the plan

A splitter is useful when one factory outlet must serve the PowerVault and a second DTP accessory. The DVA DTP two-way splitter adds a second connector without cutting or splicing the factory harness. It does not create a second circuit or double the available current. Both branches still share the upstream circuit limit.

PowerVault versus a custom exterior power box

A custom box can be built around a specific connector, fuse strategy, socket layout, and permanent mount. That route suits an owner who can document every component, terminate the wiring correctly, seal the enclosure, and accept the fabrication time.

The PowerVault is the simpler purchase when the goal is a finished, removable hub with known outputs and an included input lead. It gives up the customization of a one-off build in exchange for reversibility and a clear product boundary. Neither choice changes the capacity of the factory circuit.

Buy it if all five statements are true
  1. Your Grenadier has the factory DTP outlet you plan to use.
  2. You want exterior USB and 12 V access without drilling.
  3. Your intended devices fit the hub outputs and vehicle circuit.
  4. A removable magnetic mount suits the location and terrain.
  5. You can keep the hub out of submersion and cable pinch zones.
