INEOS Grenadier BCM Lighting: LED Errors, EXT Circuits & Fixes

The Grenadier's Body Control Module monitors current draw on every lamp circuit. An LED swap that draws 3W where the BCM expects 21W reads as a failed bulb — and stores a fault code. Here's what triggers errors, what fixes them, and the correct architecture for adding auxiliary lights without touching the BCM at all.

Quick Answer

  2. Adding a roof/bumper light bar? Skip the factory lighting circuits entirely. Wire to EXT2 or EXT3 (DTP connectors, overhead switch, BCM-independent). Zero fault codes.
  3. Factory aux lights won't activate? US and Canada require Off-Road Mode + high beams on. This is a DOT requirement, not a Grenadier bug — it cannot be bypassed without BCM reprogramming.

How the BCM Monitors Lighting Circuits

Every exterior light on the Grenadier routes through the Body Control Module. When you trigger a turn signal, brake light, or headlight, the BCM checks the circuit's current draw against a stored threshold. A standard P21W incandescent bulb draws 21 watts. An LED replacement draws 2–4 watts. To the BCM, 4W on a circuit expecting 21W looks identical to an open circuit — a burned-out bulb.

This isn't a Grenadier quirk. It's a consequence of sophisticated diagnostics that the platform shares with its BMW engineering heritage. The BCM is doing its job correctly. The problem is that most aftermarket LEDs weren't designed to satisfy its monitoring windows.

Lamp Replacement Rule

Replacement lamps must match the series type and wattage for the lamp failure check to function correctly. Rear lights are self-contained and designed for wading. All interior lights are LEDs, replaceable as whole units only. Interior lights have a 10-minute after-run when ignition is off.

These faults are stored, not transient. Even if the light works visually, the BCM logs the anomaly. Accumulated BCM faults can complicate warranty diagnostics and cause inspection failures in some markets.

Three Fixes for BCM LED Faults

1. CANBUS-Compatible LED Bulbs

Purpose-built CANBUS-compatible LEDs include an integrated resistor or smart driver circuit that draws enough current to satisfy the BCM's monitoring window. This is the cleanest solution — no external hardware, better thermal management than standalone resistors.

Caution

CANBUS LED thresholds are manufacturer-specific. A CANBUS LED that works on a BMW may still trigger faults on the Grenadier. Buy one pair and test for a week before committing to a full set. If the BCM stays clean for 7 days including a cold start, proceed with the rest.

2. Load Resistors (21W, 12V)

A 21W load resistor wired in parallel with the LED bulb draws additional current to simulate the original incandescent wattage. This satisfies the BCM's current monitoring.

The trailer LED fix follows this exact pattern. Install a 21W, 12V load resistor across the brake-light and earth wires on the trailer plug. This adds enough phantom load that the BCM sees "normal" current without affecting the LED lights themselves.

Trade-Off

A 21W resistor plus a 3W LED draws 24W — more than the original incandescent. The resistor generates significant heat in a confined space. In plastic tail light housings, this is a long-term heat concern. Acceptable short-term; look for a CANBUS LED solution longer-term.

3. EXT Circuits for New Auxiliary Lights (No BCM Conflict)

For adding new lights (roof bar, bumper lights, scene lights), the cleanest solution bypasses the BCM monitoring problem entirely: use the EXT auxiliary circuits instead of modifying factory lamp circuits. EXT circuits are dedicated power outputs controlled by the overhead console switches. The BCM enables or disables the circuit — it does not monitor current draw on these outputs.

Auxiliary Light Activation: NAFTA vs. EU Differences

The factory LED auxiliary lights in the front grille have different activation logic depending on market. This is a DOT/NHTSA regulatory requirement, not a Grenadier design choice.

NAFTA (US, Canada, Mexico)

  1. Engage Off-Road Mode or Wading Mode (mandatory)
  2. Press the auxiliary light button on the overhead control panel (LED in button illuminates)
  3. Activate high beams — the factory aux lights only fire with high beams on

EU/ROW

Off-road mode is not required. Pressing the auxiliary light button is sufficient; lights activate with high beams. This is why some YouTube tutorials show aux lights activating without off-road mode — those vehicles are not NAFTA spec.

Chassis Cab Rear Light Delivery

Chassis Cab rear lights are delivered on temporary shipment brackets. These brackets are not road legal. The converter must remove and recycle the temporary brackets, retain the lamps, and install them according to required regulations as part of the final conversion. Plan rear light installation early in your body build process — this cannot be delegated to final inspection.

Headlight Adjustment

Headlights must be adjusted on an unloaded vehicle (ready for operation — fully fueled, 1 driver). Place vehicle on a level, horizontal surface with correct tyre pressure and headlamp leveller at basic position 0. Check each headlight individually. Verify adjustment after any suspension modification or if the vehicle geometry changes.
