Without active ventilation, cooking a single meal fogs the windows, sleeping generates enough moisture to grow mold behind the insulation, and parking in direct sun makes the interior genuinely dangerous. A roof vent fan solves all three problems at once — it exhausts heat, pulls in fresh air, and removes moisture before it condenses on cold steel.

The question isn't whether you need a roof vent fan. It's which one, where it goes, how to cut a 14" × 14" hole in your roof without destroying your van, and whether one fan is enough or you need two. The MaxxAir MaxxFan Deluxe has an oversized built-in rain cover that extends well beyond the opening. This means you can run the fan with the lid fully open in a rainstorm and not get a single drop inside. The Fan-Tastic's dome is flush with the opening — leave it open in rain and you're asking for a wet interior and potentially a fried motor.

The MaxxAir shines in contrast to the Fan-Tastic; when it's rainy outside the MaxxAir can stay open and still remove the building up of moisture.

When the Fan-Tastic Actually Makes More Sense

The Fan-Tastic 7350 has a significantly lower profile. If you're running a roof rack loaded with solar panels, gear boxes, or a kayak, the MaxxAir's rain cover can get in the way. Several builders on Sprinter-Source specifically chose the Fan-Tastic for clearance reasons.

I have the Fantastic Vent with the low profile vent cover. You can pile boats or whatever on the roof rack when the vent is closed. On a high mounted roof rack you can mount solar panels on top of the vent and still open the vent 2 inches.

The Fan-Tastic also draws substantially less power at minimum speed — 1.86A vs 0.17A is a big gap, but the MaxxAir's lowest setting barely moves air anyway. At comparable airflow levels, the power draw is similar. Where the Fan-Tastic truly wins on efficiency is at maximum output: 920 CFM at only 3.0A versus the MaxxAir's 900 CFM at 4.4A.

The Fan-Tastic's single lift arm is another durability concern. Where the MaxxAir's cover sits on a fixed hinge mechanism, the Fan-Tastic dome relies on one crank arm. In high winds or while driving with the lid partially open, this arm takes all the stress. Long-term owners report the mechanism loosening over time.

I've had the Fantastic Fan on 4 vans since about 1990 and have no complaints. That fan ran all the time day and night when camping, and was still working last winter when we sold it at 12 years old. I did have to mess with the button switch — it just needed cleaned and a little dab of lubricant where it was stiff.

Where to Put the Fan on a Sprinter Roof

Placement matters more than most builders realize. The Sprinter roof has specific structural ribs running across it, and there are only a few locations where you can cut a 14" × 14" hole without hitting a cross member. The two primary locations are:

This is the most common position and where the factory AC housing sits on passenger models. Rear Position — Above the Bed Area

Popular for sleep ventilation. With the fan set to exhaust and a rear window or door cracked slightly, you get a gentle cross-breeze directly over the sleeping area. The downside: wiring runs are longer, and on some model years the roof curvature here requires a mounting adapter.

This is the most debated question on every Sprinter forum. The short answer: one fan is enough for most builds, but two fans at lower speeds beat one fan at high speed.

A single MaxxAir or Fan-Tastic pushes 900+ CFM. The interior volume of a 170" extended Sprinter is roughly 530 cubic feet. That means one fan on high can theoretically exchange the entire air volume nearly twice per minute. That's more than sufficient.

The problem isn't capacity — it's airflow path. A single fan exhausting air from one end of the van creates a pressure differential, but the incoming air has to find its way in through whatever openings are available. If your only intake is a cracked window 15 feet away, the air takes the path of least resistance and you get dead zones.

With two fans, one on push and the other on pull, we can get reasonable air exchange with each on a lower and quieter fan speed than one on high.

Installation: Cutting the Hole

This is the part that terrifies every first-time builder, and honestly it should. You're cutting a 14" × 14" hole in the structural roof of a vehicle worth $40,000+. There's no undo button. Here's the process the forums have refined over thousands of installs:

Locate the Mounting Position

From inside the van, identify the cross ribs in the roof. Your cut must fall between two ribs with clearance on all sides. Use a marker or tape from inside, then drill a small pilot hole to transfer the position to the outside.

Template and Tape

Use the fan's mounting flange (or the adapter plate) as your template. Tape it to the roof with painter's tape and trace your cut line. Apply painter's tape over the entire cut area — this prevents the jigsaw from scratching the paint.

Cut with a Jigsaw

Use a metal-cutting blade and go slowly. Drill a starter hole in one corner, insert the jigsaw blade, and follow your line. The roof skin is thin — you'll be through it quickly. File or sand any burrs and treat the exposed metal immediately with a rust inhibitor or primer.

Seal and Mount

Apply Dicor butyl tape around the perimeter of the hole on the roof exterior. Set your adapter plate (if using one) onto the butyl tape and secure with stainless steel screws. Apply a second ring of butyl tape on top of the adapter, set the fan flange on top, and screw it down. Finish with Dicor self-leveling lap sealant over all screw heads and edges.

Never use silicone sealant on a roof vent installation. Silicone prevents future adhesion if you ever need to reseal. Dicor butyl tape and lap sealant are the RV industry standard for a reason — they remain flexible, don't crack in temperature extremes, and can be cleanly removed and reapplied.

Power and Wiring

Both the MaxxAir and Fan-Tastic run on 12V DC with minimal power draw. On typical overnight use (speed 3–4 on the MaxxAir), expect around 1.0–1.5 amps. That's 12–18 watts. Wire the fan to your house battery system, not the chassis battery. Use 16-gauge wire for runs under 15 feet, 14-gauge for longer runs. Install an inline fuse (5A is sufficient) within 12 inches of the battery positive terminal. If you're running a MaxxAir, consider adding a buck converter set to 12.0V to protect the control board from higher charging voltages.
