Quick Answer — How to Carry MaxTrax on the Grenadier Side
  1. Install DVA Side Accessory Carrier (Gen 2) onto the Grenadier's factory side rail points — 4 bolts, no drilling
  2. Mount the Recovery Board Carrier rail to the Side Accessory Carrier using the included pin set
  3. Slide MaxTrax MKII or Lite boards into the carrier pins; lock with the quick-release retainer
  4. Test board retention by hand — zero play, zero rattle confirms correct seating

Why Side-Mount Instead of Roof or Ladder?

The INEOS Grenadier gives you three practical spots for MaxTrax: the roof rails (via DualTrack crossbars), the rear ladder, or the side body panels using a dedicated side carrier. Each position has a different trade-off.

The side location is the most ergonomic for solo recovery. You don't need to unload the roof or climb the ladder to reach boards — they're at hip height on the driver or passenger side, accessible the moment you step out of the vehicle.

Mount Position Accessibility Roof Clearance Impact Board Capacity
Side Accessory Carrier Hip-height, 1-hand deploy None 1 pair (MKII or Lite)
Rear Ladder Requires walking to rear None 1 pair
Roof Rails (DualTrack) Requires step or reach Adds ~6 cm 1–2 pairs
"I've used magnetic pin mounts [on the rear side panels]. They are very stable and I am confident that they will not come off unexpectedly. They do not seem to add to noise or whistling... however they have no locking arrangements to prevent theft of the MaxTrax."
— Forum member ddv (TheIneosForum, thread #12417434, Dec 2024) — testing magnetic side-panel mounts

Magnetic mounts work for flat steel areas, but the Grenadier's rear side panels are the only non-aluminium section large enough — and even then, magnetic retention has no mechanical lock. DVA's Side Accessory Carrier bolts into the factory rail anchor points on the body, giving you positive mechanical retention with a quick-release pin you can arm or disarm in seconds.

The Two-Part Side MaxTrax System

Carrying MaxTrax on the Grenadier's side requires two components: the carrier frame (the mounting rail that bolts to the body), and the board-specific mount that secures the traction boards to that frame.

1. DVA Side Accessory Carrier (Gen 2)

The Side Accessory Carrier Gen 2 is the mounting frame that attaches to the Grenadier's factory exterior anchor points along the body side — the same structural points used by the factory body panels. Gen 2 improves on the original with wider rail spacing and threaded T-nut slots that accept any DVA accessory mount without additional hardware.

  • Anodized high-strength aluminum — corrosion-proof in salt and mud environments
  • Mounts to factory body anchor points — no new holes, no surface penetration
  • T-nut slot system accepts Recovery Board Carrier, Jerry Can Carrier, Hi-Lift Jack Mount
  • Rated for 45 lb dynamic load (more than enough for a pair of MaxTrax MKII)
  • Available in driver-side or passenger-side configuration

2. Recovery Board Carrier (Universal Rail Mount)

The Recovery Board Carrier is the board-specific rail that slides into the Side Accessory Carrier's T-nut slots. It holds MaxTrax MKII, MaxTrax Lite, and other standard-dimension traction boards with a precision-machined pin set that eliminates rattling at highway speed.

  • Compatible: MaxTrax MKII (full size), MaxTrax Lite — fits the standard 4-pin board hole pattern
  • Mounting pin set included — no additional hardware needed
  • Zero-rattle design: pins are a close-tolerance fit to the MaxTrax mounting holes
  • Quick-release retainer allows board removal without tools in under 10 seconds
  • Low-profile — boards sit flush to the carrier, no significant side-body projection

Installation: Side Accessory Carrier + MaxTrax Rail

The full install takes approximately 20 minutes with hand tools. No drilling, no welding, no body modification.

  • Locate the factory side anchor points. The Grenadier has threaded body anchor points along the lower door sill area of each side. These are the attachment locations for the Side Accessory Carrier. Clean the surface with a rag before install.
  • Align the carrier bracket and start bolts by hand. Position the Gen 2 carrier against the body and start all 4 bolts by hand before torquing any of them. This ensures even seating against the body surface.
  • Torque to spec. Torque the 4 mounting bolts to the specified value in the included instruction sheet (typically 8–10 Nm). Do not overtighten — the body anchor points are threaded into the aluminium frame.
  • Slide the Recovery Board Carrier into the T-nut slots. The Recovery Board Carrier rail slides into the T-nut tracks on the Side Accessory Carrier. Slide it to your preferred position (centered is typical for a single pair of MaxTrax).
  • Lock the carrier rail position. Tighten the T-nut locking bolts to secure the Recovery Board Carrier rail in position. It should not shift under hand force when correctly locked.
  • Load the MaxTrax boards. Insert the mounting pins through the MaxTrax board holes and into the carrier. Seat the quick-release retainer. Pull the boards firmly by hand — correctly seated boards will not lift or rattle.
  • Verify fit on the road. Take a short drive over rough ground at low speed. Return and check that all bolts are still at torque and boards show no movement. Re-check at 500 km and annually thereafter.

What Fits: MaxTrax MKII vs. Lite

Both board sizes work with the DVA side mount system, but there are practical differences worth knowing before you order.

Spec MaxTrax MKII MaxTrax Lite
Dimensions 1,100 × 335 mm 1,100 × 335 mm
Weight (per board) ~2.4 kg ~1.6 kg
DVA Carrier Fit ✅ Perfect fit ✅ Perfect fit
Recovery load rating Up to 4,000 kg Up to 3,000 kg
Best for Grenadier GVWR Recommended (3,500 kg) Acceptable — check door sticker for your variant's GVWR
"Once inserted into the MaxTrax mounting holes these magnets then are placed on suitable parts of the Grenadier (either the roof or the rear side panels since these are the only larger areas that are not aluminium)... A further advantage is that they are lighter than the main alternatives."
— Forum member ddv (TheIneosForum, thread #12417434, Dec 2024) — noting aluminium body limits magnet mount locations

Note: This confirms why a dedicated carrier system that bolts to factory anchor points is preferable to magnetic mounts — the Grenadier's aluminium body limits magnet placement, whereas the DVA Side Accessory Carrier uses the structural body anchor points regardless of panel material.

Adding More Accessories to the Carrier

The Side Accessory Carrier's T-nut slot system is designed for modularity. The same frame that holds your MaxTrax boards today can also carry other accessories without removing the carrier from the body:

  • 20L NATO Jerry Can Carrier — mounts to the same T-nut slots as the Recovery Board Carrier
  • Hi-Lift Jack Carrier — dedicated side-mount jack holder for the ladder-free side position
  • MOLLE panel accessories — the Accessory Carrier provides compatible mounting for MOLLE-compatible pouches and gear organizers

The Grenadier's exterior utility belt and side mount positions are part of a modular system: you can re-configure without removing the base carrier. See the full accessory carrier collection for compatible add-ons.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I run the Side Accessory Carrier on both sides simultaneously?

Yes. The carrier is available in driver-side and passenger-side configurations. Running both sides simultaneously is common for overlanders carrying MaxTrax plus a jerry can — one side for boards, the other for fuel.

Will the side-mounted MaxTrax hit anything when offroad?

The boards sit close to the body profile. Side clearance is the main consideration on narrow tracks or dense brush. In those environments, the ladder mount is a better option — the boards are rear-facing rather than side-projecting. The Ladder-Mounted Recovery Board Carrier is the alternative for technical terrain.

Does the carrier fit with the side steps installed?

The Gen 2 carrier is designed to clear the factory side steps. Confirm fitment for aftermarket side step systems before ordering; DVA support can advise on specific combinations.

Is the Recovery Board Carrier sold separately or only as a bundle?

Both components are sold separately. The Side Accessory Carrier ($179) is the frame; the Recovery Board Carrier ($139) is the board mount. Ordering both gives you the complete side MaxTrax solution at $318 combined.
