Winch Specs: 55kN Front Pull, 350A Peak Draw, and Angle Limits

Front fixed and portable rear winch specifications, electrical demands, permissible pull angles, and the dedicated 500A EXT4 circuit that powers it all.

The Grenadier's winch architecture splits into two distinct systems: a fixed front winch with 55kN pulling force and a portable rear alternative at 35kN. Understanding which one you're specifying, and the electrical and mechanical constraints that come with it, determines what you can recover and how you'll do it.

Front vs. Rear: The Architecture Decision

The fixed front winch delivers 55kN maximum pulling force in the x-direction. If you're buying a vehicle already fitted with a fixed winch, INEOS has already modified the front cross member. If you want to retrofit later, you'll also need the cross member retrofit.

The portable rear winch maxes out at 35kN in the x-direction. It requires the auxiliary socket cable set AND the cross member retrofit.

Parameter Front Fixed Winch Portable Rear Winch
Max Pull Force 55 kN 35 kN
Direction X-axis X-axis
Peak Current ~350A at 12V
Continuous Current 150A at 12V
Circuit Breaker Yes
Cross Member Factory (winch-equipped) Retrofit required
Dedicated Circuit EXT4 — 500A Via auxiliary socket

Electrical Reality: Peak vs. Continuous

The front winch can draw approximately 350A at 12V in short-term peak conditions. Your continuous rating is limited to 150A at 12V with circuit breaker. Peak draw happens during initial spool-up against maximum resistance. Continuous reflects sustained operation.

The EXT4 circuit is a dedicated 500A winch circuit accessed via the front right wheel well, behind the cover.

Permissible Pull Angles

Operating Envelope

  • Vertical: ±45°
  • Horizontal: ±30°
  • Outside these angles: off-axis loading increases and mechanical advantage deteriorates
  • Rope as pulley: loose end must be attached to vehicle structure (e.g., lashing eye)

Aftermarket Winches

Aftermarket cable winches must be coordinated with INEOS for design and mounting location. Don't assume any winch will bolt in. The factory has done structural analysis for the factory winch; aftermarket requires departmental approval.
