Connect Portable Fridge to INEOS Grenadier DTP
The cargo cigar socket is 15A ignition-switched — use the PWR switch to extend it when the engine is off. For always-live power, tap the under-seat outlet. DTP-to-Anderson SB50 adapters give you a cleaner, field-swappable connection to the rooftop circuits. Three owner-tested methods, zero custom wiring required.
- Easiest: Plug into the cargo area 12V cigar socket (15A, ignition-switched). Flip the overhead PWR switch to keep it live when the engine is off.
- Cleanest for cargo: Use a DTP-to-Anderson SB50 adapter on the cargo socket or rear DTP port — weatherproof, quick-disconnect, no splicing.
- Always-live: The outlet under the rear seat is constant power. Crimp an Anderson connector to it and run an extension cord to the loadspace.
- Dual-battery runtime: A 40L fridge on the stock system draws back to ~90% battery within 30 minutes of driving — adequate for expedition use without a separate lithium bank.
The INEOS Grenadier's auxiliary power architecture is one of its most underused features. Between the factory 12V cigar socket in the loadspace, the overhead DTP-switched circuits, and a second battery that recharges quickly under load, you have more than enough to run a portable fridge on extended trips. The question isn't whether the power system can handle it — it can. The question is which tap point gets you the right combination of convenience, circuit protection, and always-on availability.
This guide covers the three approaches owners use in practice, the circuit specs behind each one, and what real-world runtime looks like on the stock dual-battery setup.
Cargo Cigar Socket
Simplest. Factory 12V socket, 15A fused, ignition-switched. PWR switch extends it when engine off.
DTP-to-Anderson SB50
Cleanest. Plug-and-play adapter on rear DTP port or rooftop EXT circuit. 50A genderless, field-swappable.
Under-Seat Direct Tap
Always-live. The under-rear-seat outlet is constant power — fuse and crimp Anderson connector.
Method 1: The Cargo Area 12V Socket
Every Grenadier ships with a 12V cigar-style socket in the rear loadspace. It's the fastest path to powering a portable fridge — no adapters, no wiring, just plug in and go.
The socket is ignition-switched by default: it only has power when the vehicle is running, or when the engine is off and the overhead PWR switch is toggled on. Most owners leave the PWR switch on during camp setup so the fridge stays running while they unload — the switch cuts the auxiliary circuits if battery voltage drops too low.
"I just plugged mine into the socket in the back of the Grenny. It only has power when engine is running or if engine off I flip the PWR switch on the panel it also powers the fridge and other items."— logsplitter · TheIneosForum · Powerlet outlet for fridge
The cigar socket is rated at 15A continuous, sufficient for most compressor fridges that draw 4–8A during the compressor cycle. If your fridge uses a Powerlet-style connector, pick up an adapter rather than cutting the cord — several owners have used a female Powerlet outlet wired in parallel to the cargo socket's positive and chassis ground.
The cigar socket's factory fuse is 15A. If you're wiring a parallel outlet off the same tap (for a Powerlet or secondary socket), run a 10A inline fuse on the branch wire. This protects the new outlet without affecting the factory fuse.
"Tap into the cigar plug's wiring. It's ignition-switched; it only has power when the vehicle is on. Run a fused wire (10–15A) from that positive source to your new outlet. Find a good bare metal spot nearby for the ground. This is the simplest way and ensures the fridge only runs with the engine on to protect your battery."— TheIneosForum · Powerlet outlet for fridge · Post #3
Method 2: DTP-to-Anderson SB50 Adapter
The Grenadier's factory DTP (Deutsch TwistPin) ports are rated at 25A continuous per contact — more than double a standard cigar socket. They're environmentally sealed, positive-latching, and rated to -55°C/+125°C. For a fridge that will be connected and disconnected repeatedly on overlanding trips, the DTP system is significantly more durable than spring-contact cigar plugs.
A DTP-to-Anderson SB50 adapter bridges the gap: one end mates with the vehicle's DTP04-2P receptacle, the other terminates in a 50A genderless Anderson connector. Most portable fridges ship with an Anderson pig-tail or accept an Anderson adapter directly. The cable carries 14 AWG tinned copper wire — appropriate for loads up to approximately 15A continuous over 3 meters.
For a cargo-mounted fridge, you have two DTP tap points:
| Circuit | Location | Rating | Switch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cargo socket | Loadspace 12V outlet | 15A | Ignition / PWR |
| EXT2 | Rooftop — right front (driver side) | 25A fused | EXT2 toggle |
| EXT3 (×3) | Rooftop — left front, left rear, right rear | 25A shared | EXT3 toggle |
| INT1 / INT2 | Driver / passenger footwell | 10A each | INT1 / INT2 toggle |
For a fridge in the rear loadspace, the cleanest route is to run a 3-meter DTP-to-Anderson cable from the rear rooftop DTP port (EXT3 circuit) down to the cargo area. This keeps the connection weatherproof, preserves the factory circuit protection, and lets you disconnect the fridge cleanly when you want to run other accessories on EXT3.
"I substituted the cig socket 12V outlet in the loadspace with a flat panel that includes a 50A Anderson plug and a 12V cig socket. Plugged into this I have a 350W inverter and a 40L drawer fridge, both piggy-backed off the Anderson. I have been running the fridge constantly and occasionally charging an iPad and using a StarLink off the inverter."— TheIneosForum · Auxiliary outlet connections

The Grenadier's overhead PWR switch powers the 12V loadspace socket — but there's another outlet that bypasses the switch entirely: the outlet located under the rear seat, which draws directly from the auxiliary battery and is always live.
For owners who want the fridge running even when the overhead panel is off — or who want to monitor and control the fridge via app without relying on any overhead switch — this is the cleaner option. The approach: crimp an Anderson SB50 connector to the under-seat outlet leads, run a 12V extension cord through the floor trim into the loadspace, and plug in the fridge.
"There isn't a switch with a constant power supply. But you can use the outlet located under the back seat — it's always live. Just crimp an Anderson connector onto it and run a 12-volt extension cord into the trunk. I did it with success."— whitebear · TheIneosForum · 12V in rear for fridge
Some owners prefer to draw directly off the auxiliary battery terminals with an inline fuse. This gives the most flexibility — you can control the fridge entirely through its own app and low-voltage cutoff rather than relying on the vehicle's overhead switches. The fridge's built-in voltage protection then manages the load independently.
"I put my fridge on the passenger side. I put in a Hella-style receptacle into the removable trim panel piece nearest the large door. There's a ground already under the trim panel towards the back of the wheel arch, and I drew power directly off the aux battery (with an in-line fuse near the battery); that way the circuit is always hot. I can control the fridge via a phone app, including on/off, battery preservation, etc."— nadir5 · TheIneosForum · Powerlet outlet for fridge · Post #7
When drawing directly from the aux battery without a switch, rely on the fridge's built-in low-voltage cutoff or add an external battery protect relay. The Grenadier's dual-battery system isolates the starter battery automatically — but the aux battery can still discharge to a level that makes camping difficult if the fridge runs overnight without any compensation.
Battery Runtime: What Owners Actually Report
The stock Grenadier dual-battery system holds up well for expedition fridge use, particularly on vehicles that spend reasonable time driving between camps.
The most cited data point from the forums: running a 40L compressor fridge plus a 350W inverter (for StarLink and tablet charging) on the loadspace Anderson circuit. After a day of driving, the off-road/electrical screen showed 97% battery remaining. Running the fridge constantly overnight dropped the estimate to approximately 72% — returning to 90% within the first 30 minutes of driving the next morning.
As a rough rule: a modern 40–50L compressor fridge at moderate ambient temperature draws approximately 1A–1.5A average (compressor cycling 30–40% of the time). Against a 100Ah auxiliary battery at 50% usable depth of discharge, that's 30–50 hours of run time before needing charge input — more than adequate for overnight camps with a full day of driving.
A 250W solar blanket connected directly to the auxiliary battery adds meaningful resilience in sunny conditions. Multiple owners report that the solar input outpaces fridge consumption in clear conditions, keeping the battery well above discharge concern even on multi-day stationary camps.
The PowerVault Option: All Three in One Housing
If you want to consolidate fridge power, USB charging, and a secondary 12V socket without multiple adapters, the DVA PowerVault™ Utility Hub mounts on the rooftop DTP circuit and provides a 12V socket (for fridge or compressor), USB-A/C outputs, and a waterproof housing rated for the Grenadier's roofline environment.
The 12V socket draws from the same EXT DTP circuit as the rest of the hub — rated for fridges, 12V coolers, and other DC appliances without an inverter. It activates independently of the USB ports, so you can keep the fridge running without the charging ports drawing additional load.
DVA PowerVault™ Utility Hub R2
Mounts directly on the Grenadier's rooftop DTP circuit. Provides a 12V socket for fridges and compressors, USB-A and USB-C outputs, and a weatherproof enclosure rated for roofline mounting. No custom wiring required.
